Industrial sites: optimalisation of space can be optimalised

In The Netherlands, various social issues compete for scarce space. The Dutch economy needs space to become more sustainable and to guarantee the level of prosperity. However, making better use of the specific economic functions of land still receives too little attention, even though this would bring many benefits in the long term. Ecorys believes that the current “better utilization plans” themselves should therefore also be better utilized.

According to Dutch Minister Adriaansens “Lack of space not only jeopardizes our future jobs and income, but also our joint task to become more sustainable in order to achieve climate goals”. With the continuing scarcity of space on industrial sites, better utilization of existing business parks is on the agenda of more and more governments and development agencies.

Why we need better utilization is self-evident. Yet the better utilization of specific economic functions of sites, such as high environmental categories and water-bounded sites, does not get much attention, even though it can bring major benefits in the long run. In the following Latest Insight, Ecorys colleagues Luc Heestermans and Dennis de Koning make suggestions for extensive research into the possibilities for better utilization.
