Ecorys conducts evaluation of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan

Cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the EU and continues to place a growing burden on individuals, health systems, and societies. Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, launched in 2021 with a €4 billion budget, is the EU’s flagship initiative to address the full cancer pathway, from prevention and early detection to treatment and quality of life for patients and survivors.

Our colleagues Rana Orhan Pees and Mike Beke recently presented our study Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan to the European Parliament’s Committee on Public Health (SANT). Ecorys, together with the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), supported the European Parliament Research Service (EPRS) in assessing how the plan is being implemented across Member States.

Key findings from the study include:

  • Progress in prevention and early detection
  • Persistent gaps and inequalities in access to care
  • Clear recommendations to strengthen EU-level coordination and embed equity in future cancer and public health actions
