Resilience by Design, Not by Reaction: Building on Our Webinar on Future-Proofing Europe’s Economy
On 30 October 2025, we hosted a webinar titled Future-Proofing Europe’s Economy, exploring why resilience has become a cornerstone of European competitiveness in an era of geopolitical uncertainty, energy transitions, and rapid technological change.
The discussion highlighted a fundamental shift in EU policy: moving from a purely market-driven approach to an economic security framework that aligns industrial strength, strategic autonomy, and competitiveness.
Building on this conversation, our latest Insights piece examines how Europe can future-proof its growth model through a strategic resilience agenda. It identifies five priorities for resilience by design:
1. Building strategic industrial capabilities: Reducing critical supply chain risks, reforming procurement to prioritise resilience and sustainability, and scaling EU-based manufacturing of clean technologies.
2. Reducing dependencies through strategic partnerships: Diversifying sourcing, strengthening supply chains for critical raw materials and semiconductors, and leveraging global partnerships for energy and technology security.
3. Deepening the single market for resilience by design: Eliminating fragmentation, harmonising regulations, and investing in cross-border infrastructure to enable scale and flexibility.
4. Financing resilience and inclusion: Creating long-term, predictable financing frameworks and equitable investment strategies to ensure resilience benefits all regions and actors.
5. Enhancing governance and strategic foresight: Breaking silos, integrating foresight into EU governance, and establishing joint governance bodies for coordinated action.
Why it matters?
Designing resilience is about more than mitigating risks; it’s about embedding strength and adaptability into Europe’s economic DNA. By acting now, Europe can remain innovative, open, and secure in a rapidly changing world.
