27 October 2009 - Higher education has been acknowledged as a key driver of economic growth, social development and individual and collective prosperity. While throughout the world the demand for high level skills and tertiary education is growing, higher education systems are under pressure to ensure efficiency, high quality and sustainable funding of teaching and research.

How can higher education funding systems be designed in such a way that they support modern, efficient and dynamic higher education institutions? To what extent can funding systems foster quality provisions in terms of teaching and learning, research and innovation and other key functions of higher education? And can funding systems support modernization of higher education systems at a time of high fiscal pressure and economic decline? These are some of the questions the conference sets out to explore.

The conference will take place from 27 – 29 October 2009 in Budva, Montenegro. This conference is the fifth in a series of events organized by the World Bank’s education group of the Europe and Central Asia (ECA) region and will be jointly hosted with the Government of Montenegro.

ECORYS International is supporting the World Bank in the organization of the Session on private funding for higher education.
