24 September 2009 - We are pleased to announce that ECORYS has become a knowledge partner for the recently created Urban Investment Network (UIN). The Urban Land Institute (ULI), a non-profit research and education organisation bringing together more than 40,000 private and public actors world wide in the fields of land use and real estate, has launched the UIN initiative in order to address the challenge of increasing investment in Europe's cities. This new partnership will bring together public institutions, such as city governments, but also private investors and developers, with the aim of improving private / public cooperation and innovation between cities to allow them to become "globally competitive in a knowledge-led economy, reduce carbon emissions decisively and make the most effective use of land for urban development". Its founding members include the cities of Barcelona, Amsterdam and Edinburgh, as well as ING Real Estate, ECE Projektmanagement, Euro Hypo and Allianz. Other Knowledge Partners are the OECD and the European Investment Bank. To mark the occasion of the network's establishment, an Urban Investment Network Summit will be held by the city of Barcelona on 28th and 29th of October 2009. Chaired by Jordi Hereu, Mayor of Barcelona, and moderated by Greg Clark, Senior Fellow at ULI, the summit will seek to explore the experience gained so far in successful and less successful investment strategies, projects and partnerships throughout the world, as well as lessons to be retained from previous financial crises. This broad review should help in preparing future investment plans to tackle investment bottlenecks in the future. In addition to this launch event, a number of reports are to be published. The first of these reports is entitled 'Closing the Investment Gap in Europe's Cities', which was co-written by Greg Clark, Jan Maarten de Vet from ECORYS and experts from ING Real Estate and is partly based on the 'State of European Cities Report' prepared by ECOTEC for DG REGIO of the European Commission.
