This research project will examine the complex nexus between donor policy and governance in both developing countries (incl. fragile states) and transition economies, with a particular focus on how donors make use of political economy assessment tools in the governance sphere. It will seek to answer the following research question: "What are the main analytical and operational properties of the political economy assessment tools that are used by the selected bilateral donors (Netherlands, Sweden, United Kingdom and United States); how do they make use of these tools; and how can their application be improved?"

Governance in neighbourhood renewal

Jonathan France
Principle Consultant

This project explores the relationship between central, regional and local government in the formulation and delivery of neighbourhood renewal policy. The study will consist of an in-depth investigation into three contrasting models of neighbourhood governance within three different countries, and to compare their effectiveness and the lessons learnt. It is based upon the hypothesis that good neighbourhood governance leads to more relevant, integrated and sustainable approaches to neighbourhood renewal.
