Achieving sustainable rural development
Picture for 'Achieving sustainable rural development'

Introduction:
"Sustainable rural development is currently a hot issue in most European countries. Underpinning much of current government policy today are the twin principles of promoting sustainable communities and sustainable development, measured in terms of social, economic and environmental well-being. This provides a significant challenge to policy makers who in the past have acted to meet one of these interests, often without full consideration of the impact of their decisions on other sectors."

Urban Renewal Methodology
Picture for 'Urban Renewal Methodology'

Introduction:
"Through the ECORYS Research Programme, IDEA Consult has conducted an in-depth research on urban renewal projects in Belgium. The starting point of the research is the finding that many of the more complex urban renewal projects fail to deliver at one point or another. At the same time, it is clear for all that urban renewal must be regarded as an utterly important spatial development mode, especially in dense inhabited areas such as Belgium."

Development of competition in EU postal markets
Picture for 'Development of competition in EU postal markets'

Introduction:
"In their paper 'Development of competition in EU postal markets: influence of the regulatory framework on the pattern of competition' De Bas and Van der Lijn assess to what extent potential business models of entrants in the postal market can be observed in practice. They examine to what extent the viability of the business models, and hence the pattern of competition, is influenced by the regulatory regime and assess whether it is likely that the pattern of competition in EU postal markets will converge over time."

Tax policy in Sub-Saharan Africa
Picture for 'Tax policy in Sub-Saharan Africa'

Introduction:
"This paper studies tax policies as currently pursued in a number of sub-Saharan African countries against the backdrop of increasing worldwide economic integration and the pressure this puts on revenues from trade taxes and taxes on mobile production factors. This contrasts with existing (growing) demand for public services and high public debt levels, both calling for higher tax revenues. This paper tries to come up with answers to the following question: what are the most effective and (economically) efficient ways to raise sufficient domestic (tax) revenues – without sacrificing too much on equity?"
